Brilliant Career Lessons From David Bowie

Brilliant Career Lessons From David BowieBrilliant Career Lessons From David BowieDavid Bowie radiated style, passion and wisdom over the course of a career that spanned nearly half a century. Bowie reveled in his own truth and fearlessly cultivated his eccentricity. His example, in turn, emboldened scores of Bowies fans to take pride in their differences, because he made them feel understood, worthy and represented. In his work life, David Bowie mastered a host of artistic disciplines. A seasoned musician, writer, visual artist and actor, he binnenseemed to have a compulsion to re-orchestrate reality, and present it in a new and stylish way, inviting audiences to see themselves and their world differently. David Bowie did so much more than make us dance. These are some of the career lessons he left us. Live up to your abilityBowie welches making music right up until the final days of his life. His most recent album welches released on his final birthday, January 8, 2016. Bowie had a lready planned a follow-up to the project and did a preliminary recording of five songs he hoped to include. Bowie clearly loved his work, and he continued to approach it with enthusiasm, even after he achieved the highest level of success. Michael Farrellbriefly toured with Bowie in 2003. Farrell, who at the time was the bandleader for Macy Grays band, was also part of the support band for Bowies A Reality Tour. Farrell saidAt that point, Bowie was almost 40 years into his career, and I was kind of expecting autopilot. Instead he was full of boundless enthusiasm about music. He was constantly challenging himself and his band with different songs, revised set lists, and new material. The shows were epic and full of power.Fearlessly evolve Bowie created his own genre of cool and its hard to imagine our world without his influence. Part of his identity as a songwriter, performer and artist was his perpetual inclination to grow and invent. Bowie was always evolving towards a new look, idea, way of creating or avenue for connecting with his audiences. Few performers are as enterprising, multidisciplinary or prolific as David Bowie. Bowie was quick to use technology to expand his reach for example, he was among the first artists to digitize his music. In the late 1990s he also started BowieNet, both an internet service provider and an online community where his fans could interact, sometimes directly with Bowie who frequented the site under the name Sailor.Bowie was also an entrepreneur on Wall Street, and his Bowie Bonds gave him and his fellow performers a financial instrument to which they could tie their musical catalogues.Be good to your team Farrell said that Bowies affection for the band and crew was apparent, and that he personally checked in on them to make sure they felt taken care of. Farrell remembers Bowie the coworker as someone with a simple life and work philosophy that existed beneath the public persona that Bowie showed the world. Farrell said, Of course I will remember decades of musical brilliance, those are well documented and recorded. But I took away two simple things that even a rock star like Ziggy Stardust would not overlook Work hard and be kind.

How to fit mindfulness meditation into a busy work day

How to fit mindfulness meditation into a busy work dayHow to fit mindfulness meditation into a busy work dayEver feel like youre just going through the motions at a million miles an hour, all day, every day? Wake up, go to work, go home, rinse and repeat.Using mindfulness meditation can help you slow down in a variety of ways - youll physically sit still while easing your racing mind. Here are four ways to fit this practice into a packed work day.Find a quiet space to sit in the officeAlthough it might be difficult, youll want to find a place where you cant be interrupted by others for a few minutes. So do what you can to get away from your nagging boss and/or obnoxiouscoworkers who get under your skin.Otherwise, youll probably be bombarded by a wave of the usual requests as you try to get clarity at the moment. So give yourself the space you need instead.Use your headphones and set phone remindersHeadphones can really come in handy, especially when using a program with instructions during a guided meditation. This way, you wont have to turn on the program in a quiet space, where others can hear what youre up to.In terms of setting reminders, make sure you pick a time that you know youll have access to your phone so youll see the meditation notification(s) you set.But whether youre using the Calm app, Headspace or something similar, youll be happy with the way it breaks up your daily, hectic routine.Be mindful on your daily commuteThere are a bunch of different ways to do this, like taking everything that you see in without casting it in a negative or positive light, listening to some tunes, being nice to the people around you and using social media in a specific way.Your commute may be long, but that doesnt mean it cant be both productive and healthy for you. You deserve to give back to yourself, whether its before or after the workday has come and gone.Meditate quietly when you get homeIf you cant fit in any meditation during a crazy work day, wait until you get home and can get some time to yourself. When you get there, go into a quiet space alone and zero in on your breathing.Just dont expect to be a mindfulness whiz right off the bat. This practice takes repetition. Also keep in mind that the mora you practice, the more centered youre bound to feel over time.

3 Tips to Avoid a Boring, Self-Absorbed Cover Letter

3 Tips to Avoid a Boring, Self-Absorbed Cover Letter 3 Tips to Avoid a Boring, Self-Absorbed Cover Letter 3 Tips to Avoid a Boring, Self-Absorbed Cover Letter When you meet someone new, it's not always easy to strike up a conversation, especially if you focus only on yourself. Self-absorption is a big turn-off. The trick is to find something of mutual interest and see how far it takes you. If your knowledge matches their interests, and vice versa, it could be the start of a great friendship. The same theory applies to writing your cover letter, which acts as a conversation starter for the really deep topic that follows: your resume. Karen Burns aka Working Girl drove this point home last month in an article, A Good Cover Letter Starts with You. It reminded me of a night waaaaayyy back in my single days when I was talking sort of with a young woman in a bar. The problem was I couldn't get her to stop talking about what was apparently her favorite subject: herself. About 30 mind-numbing minutes later, she handed me her phone number, which I tossed in a trash can on my way home. The point? When you write a cover letter, take the focus off yourself and place it on the person and company you're writing to. You should have already taken a good, close look at the job description, highlighted keywords and phrases, and mirrored them in your resume. Use those to start building your case in your cover letter for how you can help them. Then: 1)Do your homework. Scour the company's web site and other resources for information and news to gather a complete picture of what they do, what their markets are, how the job you're applying for fits in, and how your background can help contribute to their success. Then, work that knowledge into your cover letter. Bad Example: I have 10 years of experience in domestic and foreign procurement in the consumer products sector. Good Example: My 10 years of procurement experience in the consumer products sector, especially in sourcing goods from foreign counties, can be of immense help with your expansion into Asian markets. 2)Keep I and my under control. Yes, you'll need to say I or my to describe your skills and how they fit with the company and the position; emphasize your interest in the job; and sometimes address salary expectations. But there are some instances where you can go without it. For instance, a statement like I believe my skills match the job's requirements is more powerful without the I believe. Ever have an English teacher take off points if you used I believe or In my opinion in an assignment? It's no secret that what you write is coming from you, so these phrases are unnecessary. 3)Let someone else speak for you with a written recommendation. Consider including an endorsement from an ex-boss or colleague. Social networking sites like LinkedIn are making written recommendations the new references. Another option is to quote remarks from a past performance review. An example: In 2007, our CEO John Smith said my dedication, attention to detail, and strong communications skills with our Asian suppliers were instrumental in helping us gain 15% in market share in that region. Your cover letter serves as the opening act for your resume. In today's economy, a well-written cover letter targeting the employer's specific needs can help vault you above a larger-than-normal field of competitors. To grab the hiring manager's attention, keep your cover letter focused on the company.

The most stressed city in each state The most stressed city in each state Is wanting a low-stress life completely unreasonable?Sometimes it might seem like it.Like modern life is just a series of one stressful thing after another. Although it is easy to think that you are the only person who is super stressed all the time, we have all been there.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!On my commute to work, I often wonder if other people stuck doing the same commute as I am day-in and day-out are thinking about moving someplace where they didn’t have to waste hours stuck in traffic, working endless hours to live in a city where they can’t afford to buy a home.Yes, where you live can totally impact your stress level. This got us thinking: What are the most stressed cities in each state? So we decided to find out.Image by Zippia.comYou can find each state’s most stressed city below, but first, let’s check out the top 10.These are some of the ten mo st stressed cities in the United States:HERE ARE THE 10 MOST STRESSED CITY IN EACH STATE FOR 2019: West New York, NJ Huron, CA South Miami, FL Glassmanor, MD Edgewater, CO Manorhaven, NY Woodlawn CDP (Fairfax County), VA Justice, IL Fair Oaks, GA Terrytown, LA Not that surprising, right? At least most of them.  Florida  and  Colorado  are the surprise elements. You might be curious about how we came up with this list. Well, let me explain.HOW WE CALCULATED THE MOST STRESSED CITY IN EACH STATEUsing the most recent data from the  U.S. Census American Community Survey for 2013-2017  and  BLS, we ranked each city in America in the following criteria: Unemployment Hours Worked Commute Times Population Density Home Price to Income Ratio Percent of Uninsured Population The higher a city ranked in any of these areas, the more stressed it was. We then took a  closer  look at each of the 50 states, and ranked the cities in each state from most stressed to least stressed. This helped us determine the most stressed city in each of the 50 states. Before we get to the full list of the most stressed city in each state, let us look at the top 10 most stressed cities:THE 10 MOST STRESSED CITY IN EACH STATE FOR 20191. West New York, NJPopulation:  53,345 Commute Length:  37.2 Hours Worked:  39.1West  New York, NJ is the most stressed city in America. West New York is one of the most densely populated cities not just in the United States but worldwide. That along with super long commute and high unemployment rates make this city the most stressed in America.2. Huron, CAPopulation:  6,926 Commute Length:  28.7 Hours Worked:  45.7Huron,  California  either has really dedicated workers who all love their jobs, or it has the worst employers in the country because people in Huron work incredibly long hours. It also has the lowest average income of the 50 most stressed cities on our list. One reason could be the fact that this part of California has a large number of migrant farm workers.3. South Miami, FLPopulation:  12,255 Commute Length:  28.1 Hours Worked:  40.6South Miami, Florida? This is a surprising one, we agree. All the beautiful beaches, abundant sunshine, and exciting nightlife wasn’t enough of a stress relief for South Miamians. Long commutes, high unemployment rate, exorbitant home prices, and a large number of uninsured people put South Miami number 3 on our most stressed city.4. Glassmanor, MDSource: Wikipedia Population:  18,158 Commute Length:  40.9 Hours Worked:  39.2Glassmanor,  Maryland  has one of the worst unemployment rates in the nation. Plus, it is a suburb of  Washington, D.C. Now, who wouldn’t be stressed living that close to the nation’s capital?5. Edgewater, COPopulation:  5,299 Commute Length:  23.6 Hours Worked:  41.6Edgewater, Colorado is right next to Denver, and it is another one of the cities on our list that is a bit baffling. Edgewater’s close proximity nature and scenery don’t help the fact that the city has a high unemployment rate of almost 10% and a large number of people in the city don’t have access to proper healthcare.6. Manorhaven, NYPopulation:  6,627 Commute Length:  45.4 Hours Worked:  39.9People living in Manorhaven, New York have one of the worst commutes in the country. With the average home price in this city being over a half a million dollars, it is no surprise it is number 6 on our most stressed list.7. Woodlawn CDP (Fairfax County), VASource: Public Domain Population:  23,041 Commute Length:  37.6 Hours Worked:  39.0Number 7 on our most list is Woodlawn,  Virginia. Bad commute and lack of health  insurance  is enough to stress out the most chill person, and people of Woodlawn are no exception.8. Justice, ILPopulation:  12,973 Commute Length:  31.9 Hours Worked:  39.9“Peaceful, pretty, and proud” might be the motto of Justice,  Illinois, but data shows that it is the most stressed city in Illinoisâ€"more so than even Chicago. Turns out super long commutes, high unemployment rate, and lack of proper health care options are enough things to cause high amounts of stress.9. Fair Oaks, GAPopulation:  9,159 Commute Length:  36.2 Hours Worked:  38.9With almost half of the population having no health insurance, Fair Oaks,  Georgia  is next on our list. With the median household income of just under $31,000, People of Fair Oaks have plenty on their plates to be stressed about.10. Terrytown, LAPopulation:  24,216 Commute Length:  25.6 Hours Worked:  40.4Terrytown,  Louisiana  has a combination of factors that work against it including high unemployment rate, a sizable number of uninsured people, and long work hours for relatively low median income. This article first appeared on Zippia.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people The most stressed city in each state Is wanting a low stress life completely unreasonable?Sometimes it might seem like it.Like modern life is just a series of one stressful thing after another. West New York, NJ Population:  53,345 Commute Length:  37.2 Hours Worked:  39.1 West  New York, NJ is the most stressed city in America. West New York is one of the most densely populated cities not just in the United States but worldwide. That along with super long commute, and high unemployment rates make this city the most stressed in America. 2. Huron, CA Population:  6,926 Commute Length:  28.7 Hours Worked:  45.7 Huron,  California  either has really dedicated workers who all love their jobs, or it has the worst employers in the country, because people in Huron work incredibly long hours. It also has the lowest average income of the 50 most stressed cities on our list. One reason could be the fact that this part of California has a large number of migrant farm workers. 3. South Miami, FL Population:  12,255 Commute Length:  28.1 Hours Worked:  40.6 South Miami, Florida? This is a surprising one, we agree. All the beautiful beaches, abundant sunshine, and exciting nightlife wasn’t enough of a stress relief for South Miamians. Long commutes, high unemployment rate, exorbitant home prices, and large number of uninsured people put South Miami number 3 on our most stressed city. 4. Glassmanor, MD Population:  18,158 Commute Length:  40.9 Hours Worked:  39.2 Glassmanor,  Maryland  has one of the worst unemployment rates in the nation. Plus, it is a suburb of  Washington, D.C. Now, who wouldn’t be stressed living that close to the nation’s capital? 5. Edgewater, CO Population:  5,299 Commute Length:  23.6 Hours Worked:  41.6 Edgewater, Colorado is right next to Denver, and it is another one of the cities on our list that is a bit baffling. Edgewater’s close proximity nature and scenery doens’t help the fact that the city has a high unemployment rate of almost 10% and a large number of people in the city don’t have access to proper healthcare. 6. Manorhaven, NY Population:  6,627 Commute Length:  45.4 Hours Worked:  39.9 People living in Manorhaven, New York have one of the worst commutes in the country. With the average home price in this city being over a half a million dollars, it is no surprise it is number 6 on our most stressed list. 7. Woodlawn Cdp (Fairfax County), VA Population:  23,041 Commute Length:  37.6 Hours Worked:  39.0 Number 7 on our most list is Woodlawn,  Virginia. Bad commute and lack of health  insurance  is enough to stress out the most chill person, and people of Woodlawn are no exception. 8. Justice, IL Population:  12,973 Commute Length:  31.9 Hours Worked:  39.9 “Peaceful, pretty, and proud” might be the motto of Justice,  Illinois, but data shows that it is the most stressed city in Illinoisâ€"more so than even Chicago. Turns out super long commutes, high unemployment rate, and lack of proper health care options are enough things to cause high amounts of stress. 9. Fair Oaks, GA Population:  9,159 Commute Length:  36.2 Hours Worked:  38.9 With almost half of the population having no health insurance, Fair Oaks,  Georgia  is next on our list. With the median household income of just under $31,000, People of Fair Oaks have plenty on their plates to be stressed about. 10. Terrytown, LA Population:  24,216 Commute Length:  25.6 Hours Worked:  40.4 Terrytown,  Louisiana  has a combination of factors that works against it including high unemployment rate, sizable number of uninsured people, and long work hours for relatively low median income. The power of negotiating boundaries

The power of negotiating boundaries The power of negotiating boundaries A thoughtEvery interaction between people is guided by invisible norms. No matter where it is?- ?at work, at the gym, or at the bar?- ?the words that are spoken between individuals will always be guided by the context that underlies the situation they find themselves in.If two people know each other sufficiently well, then this context will predominantly grow out the interpersonal culture they have created between them?- ?a place where their inside jokes, their secrets, their shared histories live, a place that forms their bond. But in situations where they are relative strangers, the context will mainly be dictated by the environmental norms around them.Every successful interaction (which leads to the creation of what we call trust) grows when we move further away from the environmental norms to a deeper interpersonal culture. When I’m talking to one of my best friends, I can say a lot of things that make complete sense in their world, things that bring us closer, but these things wouldn’t make any sense to someone else. When I’m talking to a new, prospective client, on the other hand, I initially have to be very careful about what I say and how I say it, so that whatever it is I’m saying neatly fits into their existing conception of what someone like me should be saying to them in that particular situation.Eventually, this may change, but at first, I have to accommodate their conditioned expectations.Whether directly or indirectly, everything we do is shaped by our relationship to people. Humans live in such a connected world that even then we think we are acting only in relation to some object or structure, quite often, we are still operating in the social sphere, where other people have established norms we are expected to abide by.A lot of life, as a result, is a matter of interacting with these silent norms in a way that allows us to remold their form to better accommodate our individual wants and needs. Or put differently: Life is a game of negoti ating boundaries.Any time I say something to a stranger, I’m either accommodating the predominant norm that dictates the situation or I am breaking outside of it; I am deciding which side of the boundary I should fall on with each word I say, with each expression I share, with each conversation I introduce. At the beginning of any relationship, accommodating the norm is what creates trust. It tells the person you respect their social boundaries. If you don’t do this, often, the other person will be suspicious of the interaction because their expectations are being completely reshuffled before they have had a chance to get to know you and what you want. After an initial introductory period, however, the creation of trust shifts from people upholding existing norms to people breaking them to create an interpersonal culture. Most relationships we form remain in the introductory period, where norms are constantly upheld, and societal boundaries are always respected. We do this for var ious reasons: it’s comfortable, it’s what people expect, and usually, it’s just not practically necessary to push any further. But one of the main reasons we remain here, one that pretty much everyone struggles with in one context or another, is that we lack courage.Negotiating boundaries sometimes means breaking boundaries, and that also means we have to expose ourselves beyond norms. When people say that vulnerability is what brings us together, this is what they mean?- ?that we have to risk expressing ourselves in a way that defies expectation so that we can get the other person to break a norm with us to create a new norm, a norm that is personal; individualized to our particular relationship. An interpersonal culture may widen if two people continue to spend time with each other, adding to their shared experiences, but it only ever deepens when one party or the other is willing to bare themselves against the grain. When a salesperson tells a long-term client not to buy a pa rticular product from a company that worships revenue, because after listening to the client’s problem, he realizes it’s a poor fit, he’s breaking a norm. When a teenage boy makes an effort to flirt with a girl in his class to create sexual tension between them, hoping to move beyond the vague friendship they have, he is breaking a norm. When a friend tells another friend that she has lied to him in the past about something that is no longer of any practical consequence because she feels it’s the right thing to do, she is breaking a norm.We often measure our relationships by the length of time we have sustained them. We take more pride in a friendship that has lasted 20 years than one that has been around, say, five years. And there is sense to this: Time is a robust measurement when it comes to valuing the survival of something. That said, time only adds shared experienced to an interpersonal culture, which may make a relationship broader, but by itself, it can never make i t deeper.Depth directly correlates with courage?- ?with the breaking of existing norms to create new, personal norms. And courage is about moments?- ?doing what you ought to do when you ought to do it, even if it risks harm.Unspoken boundaries define every interaction we have. These boundaries create shapes and forms that enforce the surface area of our movements within the social sphere. To deepen our relationships- to expand this surface area?- ?then, we have to learn to negotiate the rigidity of these boundaries by amalgamating them with our own wants and needs. What lies on the other side of an old boundary is a new world, but this world can only be accessed by a willingness to take risks, to exercise courage, to take bold steps.A memoryI’m sitting under a cloudy sky. Now that the sun has tucked itself away, it should feel gloomy, a little dark even, but after the heavy downpour earlier, there is a lingering freshness in the air?- ?born out of an augmented smell of greenery a nd the calm, floating breeze.I pull out a cigarette. The bar I’m at is both open and intimate, and any one part in it will put you in sight of every other part. One section is covered by a roof: It has music, and it has a dance floor, and most distinctly, it has a corner to its right-hand side where strangers are getting their bodies tattooed by other strangers for no reason outside the fact that they are there and it’s an option. But I’m adjacent to this section, beyond the cover of the roof. Where I’m sitting, there is an oval-esque rink that a few skateboarders are diving in and out of. This is the main draw, the reason so many people are here. The crowd is all around it?- ?watching, talking, breathing in the scenery.“Do you have a lighter?” I ask the girl sitting beside me on the floor. She smiles and gives me one.“What brings you here?” the girl says when I return it. By “here” she is partially referring to the bar we are in, but mostly, she’s wondering why I have traveled to this place, a somewhere, a place that clearly neither of us call home.“I’ve heard good things over the years. I don’t know. I felt like it was time to come see it with my own eyes.”“It’s a place worth seeing with your own eyes. It’s the third time I’ve been here, and it feels like I find something new to love about it with each visit.”We continue the small talk for a while longer. She tells me where she’s from and what she does, and I tell her where I’m from and what I do. We make the odd joke, and we compliment the styles of the skateboarders.“Actually, the real reason I’m here is that I’m looking for connection,” I say after a brief silence. We make eye contact. I smile lightly. She does, too. Then, she slowly raises her eyebrows as if to ask me to continue my thought.“There is something about places like this that reduces friction, like there are fewer games to play, fewer hurdles to jump over. Maybe I’m looking for a shortcut, m aybe this isn’t it. But there is something about being away from home, from a place of prior expectations, that makes it easier to be with strangers, to see them, to connect beyond the superficial.”I gauge her reaction with each sentence I utter, not entirely sure where I’m going with it all other than to see where it leads.“Yeah, it’s like the societal baggage has been left behind, and with it, the bullshit,” she laughs. “No one is home here, which means that everybody is trying to figure it out as they go along. It’s actually one of my favorite things about this place?- ?seeing how people deal with the lack of history.”“It’s almost like it brings out a purity in us that is otherwise so clouded we forget it exists. Something about honesty, something about openness.”“Or maybe it just provides a temporary escape from who you really are. Or maybe it gives you a sprinkle of something novel that you confuse for permanence. Or maybe you’re just distracted, loo king for something you could just as well find at home. Or maybe, I guess, you’re right.”She has a look of lightness on her face as she says this, like she’s either teasing or testing me, like this is her way of both showing and uncovering.I just laugh a little, “I think you’ve pinned me down.”“I thought I might have,” she says, smiling back.We talk for another hour before I’m out of both cigarettes and beer, realizing I’ve lost my friends, too. We talk about the places we have been and the places we want to go, the people we have met and the people we want to meet, the books we have read and the books we want to read. Before I get up to leave, we exchange numbers. I don’t expect to ever see her again, and it doesn’t matter. Our encounter has served its purpose. The rest of the night is spent similarly: hopping from part of the bar to another, clashing with one person or another, hearing one story or another. Everything is easy, everyone is loose, every moment is unburdened. There are no expectations, no inhibitions. There is just movement and boundaries and the elastic space between the two.Want to think and live smarter? How Salesforce Empowers Engages Women in the Workplace

How Salesforce Empowers Engages Women in the Workplace How Salesforce Empowers Engages Women in the Workplace This week marks   International Women’s Day , March 8th, a global celebration of women and companies throughout the world engage women and men in conversations around gender diversity, women in the workplace and success. One of the companies at the forefront is Salesforce .  Equality is a core value at Salesforce. Led by CEO Marc Benioff, Salesforce  strives to create workplaces that reflect the communities we serve and where everyone feels empowered to bring their full, authentic selves to work. In addition to equality being a core value, it has a halo effect on recruiting and retention of top talent. After all, diverse companies are more innovative and better positioned to succeed. In 2016,  Salesforce spent nearly $3 million to eliminate statistically significant differences in pay in this first-ever equal-pay assessment. We spoke to  Divya Ashok, Director of Product Management and President of Salesforce Women’s Network about how they have built a dynamic women’s employee resource group that mentors, motivates and supports all employees. Glassdoor: Equality is a core part of Salesforce’s Ohana. How has the Women’s Network become an integral part in supporting the promotion and growth of women at Salesforce? Divya Ashok: Inclusion is a critical part of our commitment to equality to make sure we retain our diverse talent and ensure that we continue to be a destination workplace for all. As part of this, Salesforce supports 10 employee resource groups, called Ohana Groups, to provide a community for underrepresented groups and their allies, offer professional development and mentoring opportunities, and empower employees to be responsive equality leaders in their community. The Women’s Network is Salesforce’s oldest and largest Ohana Group! Founded in 2008, the Salesforce Women’s Network now has over 5,000 global members working toward gender equality in the workplace and beyond. Glassdoor: What are the types of activities the Women’s network hosts?   Divya Ashok: The vision of the Salesforce Women’s Network is to build a global women’s network to invest, support and empower in our global community of women, and inspire the Salesforce Ohana to focus on improving inclusion, equality and diversity to help Salesforce be the best place for all. Its programs include LeanIn Circles, International Women’s Day events, hands-on activities to aid non-profits focused on women and children, Woman of the Month series, mentorship programs, and more. This month, we’re excited to celebrate International Women’s Month with more than 30 events and campaigns across the globe. Glassdoor: How does the women’s network support young women and new employees to LeanIn and navigate their careers? Divya Ashok: From day one, new employees are encouraged to join Ohana groups of their interest. All of our Ohana Groups provide leadership and professional development opportunities. Salesforce’s Women’s Network, for example, offers Lean In circles, which provide opportunities for employees to network and learn from experienced employees. We also have events like speed-mentoring to help employees meet potential mentors and role models. Glassdoor: How do you show the impact of the strong female community at Salesforce to potential candidates? Divya Ashok:   During our day-one orientation, we encourage all new employees to join an Ohana Group within the first 30 days or their hire. It’s an amazing way to get the word out about Women’s Network from the start. We also have a strong presence at conferences like Grace Hopper, Fortune’s Most Powerful Women’s Summit and our own World Tours. Glassdoor: What are one or two anecdotes or examples of the type of trust and support that women at Salesforce enjoy? Divya Ashok:   The best example of this is through Salesforce’s commitment to equal pay for equal work. Salesforce has conducted two equal pay audits, resulting in the company spending approximately $6 million to date to address any unexplained differences in pay between men and women, as well as races in the U.S. I’m proud of the strong stance we’ve taken as a company on equal pay.

John Harrison

John Harrison John Harrison John Harrison John Harrison (1693 1776), English inventor and horologist, or clockmaker, overcame one of the most challenging problems of the 18th century: how to determine the longitude of a ship at sea, saving many lives. In so doing, he had to defy the establishment, fight to collect a huge prize offered by Parliament, and wait for decades before receiving the recognition he deserved. Biographers say Harrison's fascination with watches, clocks, and other timepieces can be traced to age six when he was sick with smallpox, and he entertained himself with a watch his parents placed on his pillow. Watches in those days were very large, and while not very accurate, their works were visible and one could see a relationship between the loud ticking and the watch's mechanical action. Although a carpenter by trade, Harrison's father occasionally repaired clocks, and young John assisted his father in his work as soon as he was old enough. As he grew older, Harrison combined his interest in woodworking and timepieces to begin building clocks and completed his first longcase clock, more commonly called a grandfather clock, in 1713 at the age of 20. It was just a year later that Parliament offered a prize of 20,000 pounds to calculate a ship's precise longitude at sea. Harrison decided to go for it. Sailors knew the principle of calculating longitude: that for every 15 degrees travelled eastward, the local time moved forward one hour. If they had the local time at two points on Earth, they knew they could use the difference to calculate longitude. While they could measure the local time by observing the sun, they didn't have a reference point such as Greenwich time. This was because the only clocks at the time were pendulum clocks, which quickly became inaccurate by the ship's constant motion and temperature changes. Thus, the top prize was enormous because the problem seemed impossible to solve. Astronomers always thought the solution would come from mapping objects in the sky. But Harrison thought there was a mechanical answer, one that would meet the strict criteria of keeping a ship within half a degree of longitude on a voyage from England to the West Indies. That would mean the timepiece had to stay accurate within 2.8 seconds a day, a huge challenge considering temperature changes and the ship's motion. He first began work on a land clock much more accurate than any other of the day. Much of the design was conventional, with most parts made of wood and some metal. However, he revolutionized one aspect by eliminating the need for lubricating oil that was often the main reason for clock failure. Oils dried out in summer and became thick in cold temperatures. Meanwhile, working with his younger brother James, in 1720 he was commissioned to design and build a clock tower by wealthy landowner Sir Charles Pelham for the family's estate. With this clock, he made some major design changes that enhanced the stability of the clock. The two brothers continued to design a series of high-precision grandfather clocks that included innovations such as a pendulum rod made of alternate wires of brass and steel, which eliminated the problem of the pendulum's effective length increasing in warmer weather, slowing the clock. Satisfied with the exceptional performance of his land clocks, Harrison around 1730 began working on a sea clock and over a period of 20 years produced a series of timekeepers, now referred to as H1, H2, and H3, that were large clocks with special balance mechanisms, compensating for the ship's motion. Harrison's work was so highly regarded by the Royal Society, the U.K.'s learned science organization, that in 1749 he was awarded the prestigious Copley Medal, the Society's premier award. However, none of his clocks were accurate enough to satisfy the conditions to win the top prize. Finally, after 40 years of work, he produced H4, a timepiece that resembled a large pocket watch. This clock not only met the requirements for Parliament's top prize in a trial but greatly exceeded them. However, for various reasons including that members wanted to win the prize themselves, the Royal Society, which administered the prize money, awarded only a portion of the money and asked for more tests. When the clock did even better, they doled out another portion of the money. But it took the intervention of King George III to get Harrison his full reward and recognition, some 12 years after the horologist had fulfilled the original conditions. Harrison was then 80 years old. He had spent his entire life solving a tough problem, but in the end, it was an accomplishment that significantly benefited the entire world and particularly the field of maritime navigation. Nancy Giges is an independent writer.A year later …Parliament offered a prize of 20,000 pounds to calculate a ship's precise longitude at sea. Harrison decided to go for it.

How to Deal with Disappointment After Changing Jobs

How to Deal with Disappointment After Changing Jobs How to Deal with Disappointment After Changing Jobs How to Deal With Disappointment After Changing Jobs Feeling the new-job blues? These tips will help! The job-search process can be stressful, and most professionals can't wait until they finally sign that perfect contract. Time to say goodbye to their old job and embrace the excitement of a new office, new colleagues, and new responsibilities. But what happens if you've crossed over to the other side and found that the new job isn't what you imagined? What if you dread going to work and wish you could have your old job back? Believe it or not, this crestfallen feeling is pretty common. However, it doesn't mean you should resign from the new position and run back to the comfort of your old office. Here are five things you should do instead. Take some time to breathe Negative emotions don't automatically mean you've made a mistake and chose the wrong job. Most professionals don't realize that starting a new job is a major life-changing event. When it comes to the stress scale, a job change is up there with marriage, divorce, or even a death in the family. Let go of the expectation that you should just go on as if nothing happened! Instead, go easy on yourself. You've just lost your old crew. Yes, you changed jobs voluntarily but a loss is still a loss, and suppressing or ignoring that fact won't move you forward. Make it okay to miss your former co-workers, that amazing coffeemaker in the kitchen, the fun team lunch on Fridays, or whatever it is that you miss. Find one thing to enjoy at your new job Happiness at work is a practice and that means it will take some work. Your new task is simple but not easy. Go and find one new thing that you enjoy at work, and do it every single day. This will be difficult at first because our brains tend to automatically seek out what's wrong with the world around us. Set aside a few minutes each day to write down a few words about something that made you smile. You could use a Word document, a simple notebook, or a more formal journaling tool, like the Best Self Journal. Another way to go about this is to decide in the morning what will be the highlight of your day. Perhaps it's finishing that report, or enjoying a coffee break with a new colleague, or trying something new for lunch. It doesn't matter if you choose a big thing or something really small the key is to have something that you look forward to every single day. Remind yourself of the big picture Professionals change jobs for so many reasons, and sometimes the major reasons you left can get mixed up with small annoyances. It's true that sometimes, we can blow small things out of proportion. Related:Before You Jump Ship, Consider These 5 Tips Did you leave your job because of your ever-micromanaging boss? The eternally broken copy machine? The lack of upward mobility? That one difficult client? The lack of budget funds for basic supplies? Or the rickety office chair that made your back hurt? Probably not. There was a bigger reason you've put yourself through the discomfort of the job search. Remind yourself of that reason. What were you seeking? Does your new company still offer that opportunity? Is it possible that, underneath all the inconveniences of adjusting to a new job, this might be a gift for your future self? Make a list Now that you know what you were hoping to get from your new job, it's time to make a list. Disappointment is a symptom that in some way (big or small), reality failed to match your expectations. So, let's hunt down the mismatches that may be causing your new-job blues. Think about what you expected and what got delivered. The more specific you can get, the more useful this list will be in our next step. Here's what to focus on: Were you promised an office, but assigned a cubicle instead? Are you working longer hours than you expected? Are your actual job responsibilities drastically different from what had been discussed during interviews? Are you getting the training you need to be at your best? Are you sitting on your hands with nothing to do? The truth is that you and your employer both want this hiring decision to work out. HR and the hiring manager don't look forward to re-opening the candidate search. You probably aren't eager to jump back into job-search mode, either. So, if you have specific requests that could help you succeed and add value, chances are that the company will be willing to accommodate them. Some things, like a mismatch between you and the company culture, can't be helped. But there's plenty that could be fixed if you ask. Know when to call it quits Yes, there are situations where quitting a job you've just started is the best choice. Perhaps you have landed in a toxic work environment. Maybe the new job requires additional training that the company can't provide. Or perhaps the actual job is very different from the position you had been promised and the company can't or won't change your assignment. Related: How to Spot a Toxic Workplace Before You Take the Job If that is the case, be absolutely certain about your decision, because it will be final. Talk it through with a mentor or a friend whose judgment you trust. Once you speak up, there's no going back! It's usually best to deliver the news to your supervisor in person. Be prepared to explain your reasons for resigning, keeping your explanation objective and professional. Be polite, offer as much notice as you can, and acknowledge that your departure puts the company in a tough spot. And know that despite your best efforts at a graceful exit, there will probably be hurt feelings and burnt bridges by the time the door closes behind you. Dealing with disappointment in your new job So, what should you do if you are a week or two into your new job when you realize that you don't like it there? First off, don't make rash decisions. You can't take back a resignation! It can damage your reputation and hurt your career. Be sure to look at your situation objectively. Sometimes, professionals expect that the new job will be all sunshine with no downsides whatsoever., and that's neither realistic nor reasonable. Remind yourself of why you chose this job and consider whether it's still possible to get what you had hoped for. Finally, know when leaving is the best course of action. And if you choose to resign, handle the transition with as much patience and grace as you can muster. Of course, it would be better to choose the right-fit job in the first place and avoid the potential reputation risk and hassle but you still have options if it ends up being a bad fit.
